Jan Erik Waider

Jan Erik Waider (Germany) is a visual artist and fine-art photographer based in Hamburg, known for his intimate and abstract interpretations of northern landscapes. With a particular fascination for water, ice and the raw beauty of remote environments, he looks beyond traditional landscape views to uncover extraordinary details, colours, patterns and textures that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Jan’s photographic journey took an unexpected turn during a trip to Greenland in 2010. Using a Nikon D90, he made thousands of photographs and uploaded them to Flickr simply to share the experience with friends and family. A few months later, Apple contacted him to license one of the images. Encouraged by that unexpected opportunity, Jan began developing Northlandscapes alongside his work as a web designer, gradually building photography from a personal passion into his full-time profession.

Drawn especially to Iceland, Greenland and other remote northern regions, Jan is fascinated not simply by cold weather, but by the landscapes it creates: frozen lakes, glaciers, winter storms and constantly changing formations of ice and water. Rather than chasing familiar viewpoints, he follows his curiosity and allows inspiration to find him. A planned destination may lead to hours spent exploring something entirely unexpected — a small pattern in a frozen pond, a detail in a glacial river or a texture that reveals a new way of seeing the landscape.

Photography has become a visual diary of Jan’s travels, preserving not only how a place looked, but also its atmosphere, emotion and sensory experience. Through photography, film and internationally commissioned work, he transforms real encounters with nature into quiet, often abstract compositions that invite viewers to slow down, look more closely and discover extraordinary beauty beyond the obvious.
