Andy Caven

Conservation Biologist

Andy Caven is a conservation biologist, researcher, educator, and advocate whose work focuses on migratory birds, grassland ecosystems, and wildlife conservation throughout North America's Central Flyway. Combining scientific research with public engagement, he works to better understand and protect the landscapes that support some of the continent's most important migratory species.

Throughout his career, Andy has focused on the relationships between wildlife, habitat, and the people who live and work within these ecosystems. His work emphasizes not only the conservation of individual species, but also the broader ecological networks that connect wetlands, grasslands, rivers, agricultural lands, and communities across large geographic regions.

As a member of the International Crane Foundation, Andy has been closely involved in research, outreach, and conservation efforts related to cranes and other migratory birds. His work has helped raise awareness of the challenges facing these species and the habitats they rely upon, while also encouraging greater public appreciation for the role migration plays in connecting landscapes across North America.

Originally trained as a scientist, Andy has developed a reputation for making complex ecological issues accessible to wider audiences through education, storytelling, and public engagement. His ability to bridge science and communication has made him an effective advocate for conservation at both local and continental scales.

Among his recent projects is the Whooper Highway, a 2,500-mile bicycle journey he completed with conservation photographer Mike Forsberg, following the migration route of the endangered whooping crane from Texas to Canada. The project combined science, conservation, adventure, and storytelling while highlighting the landscapes, communities, and ecosystems connected by one of North America's most remarkable migrations.
