Peter Mather

Peter Mather is a wildlife photographer, photojournalist and filmmaker based in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. His work focuses on the wildlife, wilderness and communities of the North, with long-term projects taking him across the Yukon, Alaska and the Arctic.

Rather than simply photographing animals, Peter uses photography to tell larger stories about the northern environment and the people and ecosystems connected to it. His subjects have included wolverines, caribou, Arctic foxes, grizzly bears and salmon, often involving years of fieldwork, remote camera traps and some seriously challenging conditions.

His work has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, Canadian Geographic, Smithsonian and other international publications. He was awarded Third Prize in the Nature Stories category of the 2020 World Press Photo Contest for his wolverine work, and his projects have also received repeated recognition from the BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition. He has also ventured into filmmaking, including his documentary Kings of the North: The Search for the Last Ice Bears.

Based in the Yukon, Peter continues to combine photography, conservation, filmmaking and storytelling — usually somewhere outside, often in the cold, and occasionally accompanied by his dog, Luke Skywalker. 🐺❄️📸
