"Bruce Dale: Planning for the Unplanned (Part 1)"

Sometimes a childhood dream takes you further than you could ever have planned.

For Bruce Dale, it began with a National Geographic magazine and a map hanging on his bedroom wall. Years later, that curiosity would lead him to become a National Geographic staff photographer, travelling across more than 75 countries and spending three decades documenting the world he had once only imagined.

In this first part of our conversation, Bruce takes us back to his childhood in Ohio and the unexpected road that led him into photography. From riding freight trains and spending a night in jail to working as a newspaper photographer, his journey eventually brought him to what he calls the Platinum Years of National Geographic—a time when photographers were given the freedom, resources, and support to turn even the wildest ideas into remarkable pictures.

We talk about how a National Geographic job that was supposed to last no more than three years somehow became thirty, why good ideas could be just as important as being a good photographer, and what it was like working for a magazine where, if the equipment needed to make a photograph didn’t exist... they simply built it.

And because this is The Camera Café Show, Bruce also takes us behind some of his most memorable photographs. From bathing in the Ozarks and photographing a heart transplant to freezing a bullet in mid-air, each story reveals the curiosity, imagination, and problem-solving behind the pictures.

More than anything, this first part is a reminder that even the most carefully planned journey needs room for the unexpected. Bruce’s career shows what can happen when curiosity becomes a way of life—and when a young boy looking at a map never stops exploring the world beyond it.

And we are only getting started. In Part Two, Bruce returns with more behind-the-scenes stories, wild encounters, unusual inventions, and a photograph that has travelled more than 15 billion miles from Earth... and counting.

So grab a coffee, open your world map, and join us for Part 1 of this wonderful conversation with Bruce Dale ☕🌍📸
