Pascal Maitre

Pascal Maitre

Photojournalist

For more than forty years, Pascal Maitre has travelled across some of the most complex and historically important regions in the world, documenting conflict, migration, religion, energy poverty, environmental issues, and everyday life far beyond the headlines.

Born in France, Pascal began his career in the late 1970s and quickly developed a style of long-form photojournalism built around time, trust, patience, and immersion. Over the decades, his work has taken him through Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion, dangerous regions of Somalia, Congo, Ethiopia, Sudan, the Sahel and more than forty countries throughout Africa, often returning to the same places again and again over many years.

Rather than focusing only on dramatic moments, Pascal’s photography has consistently explored the human complexity underneath major world events — the daily realities, histories and lives that are often forgotten once the headlines disappear.

His work has appeared in major international publications including National Geographic, Geo, Paris Match and Stern. He has received multiple World Press Photo Awards, the Visa d’Or d’Honneur for Lifetime Achievement at the Visa pour l’Image festival of photojournalism, and today is also a Canon Ambassador.

Known for his curiosity, calm presence and deep commitment to documentary storytelling, Pascal Maitre remains one of the most respected voices in contemporary photojournalism.
