Pat Kane

Indigenous photojournalist

Pat Kane is an Indigenous photojournalist and documentary photographer based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and a proud member of the Timiskaming First Nation. His work focuses on the intersection of identity, environment, and community in Northern Canada — often capturing powerful, quiet moments in extreme conditions.

In 2024, Pat received a Vital Impacts Grant, led by Ami Vitale and supported by Jane Goodall, for his ongoing project documenting the urgent need for caribou conservation in Indigenous territories.

Pat has photographed everything from climate change and Indigenous sovereignty to daily life in the Subarctic, and he’s passionate about telling stories that are grounded in trust and long-term collaboration. He is also the co-founder of the Far North Photo Festival, which celebrates visual storytellers from across the Arctic and Subarctic.

His images have appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, World Press Photo, Maclean’s, and more — but his true focus lies in creating space for Northern voices and stories that rarely make headlines.
