Robert “Bob” Madden is a former National Geographic staff photographer whose career with the magazine spans decades of travel, storytelling, and visual exploration around the world.
He began photographing for National Geographic in the late 1960s, a period often considered the golden era of the magazine, and went on to document a wide range of assignments — from major historic events to remote locations and cultures rarely seen by outside audiences. His photographs have appeared in numerous features and remain part of the visual legacy of the magazine’s storytelling during a transformative period for photojournalism.
In addition to his work in the field, Bob later took on a key role inside National Geographic as Director of Layout and Design. In that position, he became part of the team that helped guide the magazine into the early digital era, just a few years after the emergence of the World Wide Web, helping shape how photography and storytelling would transition into a new technological landscape.
Across his career, Bob has experienced the realities of life on assignment — the travel, the unpredictability, the humor, and the occasional close call — and his stories offer a vivid look at what it meant to work as a photographer during a pivotal time in the history of visual journalism.
Today, he continues to share his experiences and insights, offering thoughtful reflections on photography, storytelling, and a lifetime spent following curiosity wherever it led.
