Harvey Stein is a celebrated street photographer, educator, and author whose iconic black-and-white images reflect the rhythm, tension, and humanity of urban life—particularly in New York City. With a career spanning over 50 years, Stein has published 10 photography books, including Coney Island, Harlem Street Portraits, and Mexico Between Life and Death. His work has been exhibited in over 90 solo shows and is part of almost 60 permanent museum collections worldwide, including the George Eastman Museum, Art Institute of Chicago; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The New Orleans Museum of Art and The Denver Art Museum. His photographs have been published in such periodicals as The New Yorker, Time, Life, Esquire, The New York Times, Forbes and many more.
A passionate teacher, he has influenced generations of photographers through his long-standing faculty role at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and numerous workshops. Harvey brings a deeply human and timeless perspective to the streets he photographs.
