Meryl Meisler

Street Photographer

Meryl Meisler is a photographer, educator, and visual storyteller whose work offers a colorful, humorous, and deeply personal portrait of New York life from the 1970s onward. Best known for her street photography and photographs of the disco era, she has spent decades documenting family, friends, neighborhoods, celebrations, and the everyday moments that often become the most meaningful with time.

Born and raised on Long Island, Meryl received her first camera as a child and developed an early fascination with photography. Rather than approaching photography as a series of projects, she photographed the life unfolding around her, creating an extensive visual diary that would eventually span decades. Her work captures everything from family gatherings and suburban life to the streets of New York City and the legendary nightlife of venues such as Studio 54 and Paradise Garage.

Alongside her photographic pursuits, Meryl enjoyed a long and successful career as an art teacher, inspiring generations of students while continuing to photograph throughout her life. Much of her work remained largely unseen for many years until her archives were rediscovered, leading to a remarkable second chapter in her photographic career.

Since then, her photographs have been published in numerous books and exhibited internationally, earning recognition for their unique blend of documentary value, humor, nostalgia, and human connection. Today, Meryl continues to share her work through books, exhibitions, lectures, and community projects, offering audiences a vibrant and deeply personal window into the people, places, and stories that shaped her life behind the camera.
